Although my race, ethnicity and heritage have made me unique as an individual, it is actually my daily exposure to diversity – the faces, the clothes, the attitudes, the values, the traditions, the behaviors and beliefs of others around me that led me to understand and appreciate the value of diversity and its important role in society. I have become a diverse person through my involvement as a Science Olympiad participant, student sports aide, volunteer at the local soup kitchen, church member, and through my experiences working with autistic children at my school . These opportunities to discover and share my diverse interests, talents, and ideas with others have been invaluable, making my high school years a more enriching experience and, ultimately, making me a better and more accepting person. In particular, my experience working with autistic children has had a profound effect on me. Centerville High School has an extremely strong autism program and students are encouraged to get involved by participating in special needs classes or taking a gymnastics class with autistic students. I have had the opportunity to spend time with autistic students since my first day as a freshman. My involvement with autistic students includes a daughter who is a fellow athletic trainer. Although she can't fully participate in the team's attendance, she is always present at practices and games and can be found hovering around the head coach trying to learn. These experiences taught me that there are different types of people in the world and that they should not be treated differently because of their appearance, race, or disability. I have become a more understanding and tolerant person and I realize that I have a lot to learn from others. Diversity has helped me better understand the world and who I am as a person.
