  • Essay / Manatee Essay - 937

If you're a Floridian, (and even if you're not), when you think of the sunny state, certain things or symbols come to mind. It could be our warmer climate, beaches, oranges or even an alligator. However, there is another animal, a gentle giant and an enduring ambassador of Florida's waters. It's a sea cow or manatee. In this article, I will convey the facts about the manatee such as: habitat, feeding habits, size and mating. I'll discuss their declining numbers and how all of us who enjoy these waters can make a difference and I'll talk about a special cow, named "Snooty." The manatee belongs to the sirenian species. Do you see the word mermaid there? Many believe that mermaid legends and folklore may have originated from these creatures. When you see these slow, huge sea cows up close, it can produce hilarity. The manatee can grow up to thirteen feet long and weigh up to 1,300 pounds. They have a brownish gray exterior, with whiskers on their snouts. They are more like walruses to some extent and were even placed in this family for a time. This description is a far cry from what most mental images of a “mermaid” would be. As noted, manatees resemble a walrus and are believed to be related to them. (Reynolds, Odell, 1991) However, research actually links them to that of the elephant. Manatees are herbivorous; human equivalent of a vegetarian. They eat a variety of submerged, emergent foods... middle of paper ... but they don't go fast enough (Bloch, 1993). Since 1976, 5 percent of all manatees have died each year. In 2011, Fish and Wildlife proposed providing year-round protection. On the Humane Societies website, a variety of ways we can all help are listed. For example: buy a license plate to finance, join the “Adopt a Manatee” program, report manatees in difficulty, do not harass them or jump on them. Since the main cause of their death is boat-related, the best thing to do is to slow down and stay in deep water, away from their habitat. It is also recommended if you are a boater to purchase polarized glasses. These reduce reflections and allow you to see beneath the water surfaces. If all of us who live in or visit Florida become more aware and obey the laws, the only way we will know of the existence of these gentle giants is in captivity; Which brings me to Snooty…
