Essay / How to Thrive with Deafness or Hearing Impairment
I am currently an art education major, but my dream has always been to work and eventually teach in a school for the deaf. I was born with hearing loss. I wasn't deaf but I was hard of hearing. We didn't know about this hearing loss until he was four or five years old. I taught myself to read lips, so for the longest time they thought I was just stubborn and stubborn, but they didn't know that I just couldn't hear them. Around age five, I went to an audiologist and had ear tube surgery. After that, my hearing was 90 percent better. I still struggle from time to time if someone doesn't face me when they're speaking, but it's much better. Since then, I think that sign language and the Deaf community are extremely interesting! There are two groups of hearing impairments. They differ depending on the degree of hearing loss. Children with a more severe form of hearing loss are deaf, and children with less severe hearing loss are considered hard of hearing (Meece & Daniels, 2008, p. 88). Most students with hearing loss only hear specific frequencies or sounds within a certain volume range. They will most likely have the floor; however, their speech might be impaired due to their inability to hear their own voice clearly. Although deaf students may have little or no speech depending on the severity of their hearing loss, they are more likely to use American Sign Language than students who are hard of hearing (“Deaf or Hard of Hearing,” 2004). Hearing loss can significantly affect a child during their early development. It is important to be aware and careful before noticing the signs of possible hearing loss, as language and communication skills have developed...... middle of document ....... Through ear tube surgery, hearing aids, cochlear implants and ASL, children can develop relatively similarly to other children. Lack of senses (e.g. hearing, sight) makes all developmental processes more difficult, but with the help of the help mentioned above, children with hearing loss can develop like children without hearing loss. With this help, hearing impaired children study information processing theory, social culture theory and many more. I am so lucky to have had ear tube surgery and had the opportunity to develop socially and cognitively. I will always have a special place and concern in my heart for students who are hard of hearing. I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to teach hearing impaired students and give back because of my unique interest..
