IOM Report on the Impact on the Nursing Profession « In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year study initiative to address the need to evaluate and transform the nursing profession (Institute of Medicine, 2010). An interdisciplinary committee was formed to report on national issues impacting health care. Recommendations were made by the IOM to improve and restructure the nursing profession. to adapt to the future of the medical field (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The committee's recommendations begin with an action-oriented plan for the future of nursing and identify issues for medical care, research, and education (Hassmiller, 2010). The Affordable Care ActThe ANA incorporates concepts from the IOM report, with an emphasis on leadership, education, and nursing practices (American Nurses Association, n.d.). across the healthcare system, from bedside to boardroom (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The IOM advocates for nurses while helping them assume leadership roles. In the past, the role of nurses was seen as assisting the doctor and simply carrying out his orders. According to the IOM report (2010), nurse leaders should be "full partners in redesign efforts, accountable for their contributions to the delivery of high-quality care and working collaboratively with leaders of other health professions” (p. 3). Implementing the transformations will have a direct impact on patient outcomes when it comes to action. IOM has clearly outlined the action-oriented plan and steps to ensure that nurses are well positioned to lead and carry out the necessary transformations recommended in the advanced healthcare system.
