Essay / The TED conference: A story of mental illness? - 786
She said clearly, and I believe it is also true, that people are suffering and cannot receive the appropriate treatment. Many homeless and incarcerated people suffer from mental illnesses and will only continue to be placed in the system or remain on the streets if they do not receive the help they need. Elyn is such a strong woman who references a traumatic time for her, where a doctor seemed quite abusive in attempting to strap her to a bed and admit her to the hospital. People who suffer from schizophrenia are humans, just like you and me, and they don't feel safe or comfortable being tied to a bed, just like you and I wouldn't. I can't imagine how I would feel experiencing the horrible hallucinations and delusions she described. The manual goes hand in hand with what Elyn describes as her moments of psychosis. She experiences hallucinations and delusions which are described in this course in Chapter 12. This chapter also discusses medications or antipsychotic medications which play and have played an important role in helping Elyn become a productive member of society. Antipsychotic medications can be extremely beneficial for patients and will continue to be for many people.
