    A. Need for Professional DevelopmentProfessional development is needed to help teachers plan lessons that promote the active and intellectual engagement of all students. The essential question that will be answered during professional development is: How can you create lessons that promote the active and intellectual engagement of all students?A1. How the Need Was Identified This professional development was identified by analyzing trends in student data, as well as current trends in data collected from recent teacher observations. When he spoke with the principal of the internship school, he expressed concern about general trends emerging from observations completed by district administrators and evaluators. These trends showed that the majority of teachers were classified as progressive (J. Grantham, personal communication, November 1, 2013). During this discussion, he felt that this had a direct connection to student achievement data, which shows that students are struggling. He wanted to provide his teachers with professional development to improve lesson planning so that more of students' individual needs were met and all students were intellectually engaged.A2. Relationship to Student Achievement DataAccording to Dr. Grantham, fewer than 50% of students scored a level three or higher on the FCAT assessment in reading and math (personal communication, November 1, 2013). Because results were low, this was a major priority for the school. He believes that teachers do not plan lessons based on current student data and do not respond to students' individual needs during lessons.A3. District GoalsHillsborough County Public Schools has created a strategic plan that outlines goals for...... middle of paper ...... professional development assessments, we have noticed a consistent complaint of time. After seeing this negative feedback, we decided as a team to continue the conversations at the next professional learning community meeting the following week. Because there was so much positive feedback, we decided as a team to pursue these professional development opportunities. We will continue to examine other trends from teacher observations and student data and plan accordingly. I would suggest to the team that the next workshop be given on the evaluation component. This component also appears to be a weakness among teachers when observed. This assessment piece would have a direct link to students' intellectual engagement as assessments given during lessons could be analyzed in order to plan future lessons based on students' needs..
