An analysis of Google's attempt to create an adventurous climateIn August 1998, two entrepreneurs, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, formed the Google Company, Inc. Rapidly spreading around the world, Google is known as one of the most important search engines in today's market. Due to the large size of the company and access to financial resources to finance new ideas, Google has been very involved in corporate ventures since the very beginning. To begin, it is important to define a corporate venture before considering creating a climate for new ideas. Block and MacMillan (1993) define a business as follows: Internal business ventures (ICVs) can include major new products, new market development, commercialization of new technologies, and large innovative projects. They may involve strong diversification or be closely linked to the company's other activities. The main differentiating qualities are risk, uncertainty and importance. (p. 14) Google's corporate plans include major new products, new market development, commercialization of new technologies, and major innovative projects, both closely related to current business and new business . While it is important to note the types of companies, this paper will only focus on the adventurous climate created by Google, and not necessarily the companies themselves. Google has successfully met this challenge in different ways. Founders Page and Brin encouraged development, creativity, entrepreneurship and risk-taking by setting an example for their employees. There are essentially ten strategies for creating an adventurous climate (Block p. 37). Google has created an adventurous climate by following these ten strategies. The first strategy consists of insisting that the entire division continue to develop new activities (Bloc p. 37). The Google Jobs website states: “We work hard to create an inclusive, collaborative and innovative environment. One of the ways Google actively encourages innovation in the workplace is by promoting the “20% Project.” All Google engineers spend 20% of their time on projects they are passionate about. This led to the creation of some well-known Google products, such as Gmail, and Google News, "products that otherwise would have required the launch of entire start-ups" (www.google.com).
