  • Essay / The C 130j Super Hercules - 882

The birth of the C-130J in April 1996 marked the beginning of a major overhaul of the older C-130H Hercules cargo aircraft produced by Lockheed Martin Corporation (History of the C- 130, nd). The major change between the C-130H and the new C-130J Super Hercules is the enormous amount of computer technology and software incorporated into the design and operation of this new cargo aircraft. Advances in technology have allowed engineers to redesign this workhorse to perform demanding missions with just two crew stations compared to its predecessor, the C-130H, which had five crew stations. Technology and software capabilities allow two pilots and a loadmaster to accomplish some of the most demanding missions in the most difficult locations. AnalysisThe C-130J Super Hercules was equipped with more computers and computer software than any other C-130 predecessor. The most widespread advancement of this aircraft is the pilot's heads-up display. Dual head-up display systems provide the pilot with aircraft flight path, acceleration, improved situational awareness, improved energy management, approach stability and landing accuracy (Rockwell, n.d.). Additionally, this aircraft operates two mission computers, a backup mission computer, advanced autopilot systems, a digital communications system, multifunctional computer displays, advanced radar systems, and air traffic control systems improved. One can easily see how computers and design software have impacted the C-130J from design concept to operational with computer dependency. The Rockwell-built duel head-up display system provides current flight information in the pilot's forward field of vision, eliminating the need for continuous transition from head-down to head-down instruments......middle paper......n flies, and although I'm not a pilot, performing my loadmaster duties in the skies above is enjoyable nonetheless. Being a Loadmaster allows me to escape my office duties and trade my desk for the blue sky a few times a week. This passion drives me to keep up to date with the latest technologies impacting aviation. I began flying the C-130E Hercules in 1997 until the Congressional mandate required all C-130E Hercules to be sent to long-term storage in 2012. I then progressed to the C-130H Hercules for three years, before starting my career as a C-130J Super Hercules loadmaster. After being a C-130J loadmaster for over a year, I can clearly see how computer software contributes greatly to the operation of this aircraft. Out of my enthusiasm for this plane, I wanted to brag about my plane on which I enjoy flying..
