The technological changes observed in the field of information technology over the last two decades are nothing short of revolutionary. They have changed the way people learn, travel, work, do business and play. One of the obvious results of this technological revolution is that it creates new challenges and new ethical questions that need to be resolved. Some of these questions concern privacy, security, ownership and hacking. The underlying idea is that ethical complications arise from conflicts between varied interests (Hongladarom & Ess, 2007). These questions cannot be resolved solely on the basis of individual interests. Additionally, there are professional requirements for ethical behavior that must be respected by all players in the information technology sector. This article will discuss the contemporary ethical environment in information technology with a focus on these professional requirements for ethical behavior. It will argue that professional conduct is essential to avoid and resolve ethical conflicts that arise in the field of information technology. The word ethics refers to a set of principles about right and wrong conduct within a society. Ethical behavior conforms to generally accepted standards, most of which are universal (Reynolds, 2012). The range of ethical issues in the field of information technology is wider than in any other sector. This is due to several defining characteristics of information technology that create new ethical problems. These include speed of information processing, unlimited size of information storage capacity, availability of information anywhere, and easy reproduction of digital information (Schultz, 2006). Information technology professionals must adhere to the code of conduct established by the relevant professional body, as well as their professional competence and integrity. Information technology professionals must meet these and other requirements to maintain the industry's reputation.
