Essay / Persuasive Speech on Fast Food - 1037
The United States has become the most overweight country in the world over the past fifty years. In fact, sixty-nine percent of adults over the age of twenty are obese or overweight. (CDC) The fast food industry and the production of highly processed foods have fueled this epidemic. Millions of dollars are made in the production of processed foods that last for years due to harmful additives added to foods. Companies have exploited Americans' addiction to quick, easy, and cheap food by providing these less nutritious foods for nearly half the price of fresh produce. What can be done to promote better health for the American population? I think we need to promote healthy eating habits and educate about the dangers. Promoting a healthy society would benefit many areas of our daily lives and encourage people to be more productive in everything they do. Healthy eating habits would generate better performance in your workplace, more energy in the gym and increase brain functions. Factory farms have become known for injecting their animals with steroids and antibiotics that have been proven to lack essential nutrients that are prevalent in animals raised on small farms. These large-scale farms are often overcrowded, poorly fed, and mistreated by their caretakers. There have been undercover documentaries exposing the conditions of life on these farms, but nothing has been done to completely prevent them. Not only do these animals lack nutrients, but they may also contain harmful bacteria due to the unsanitary conditions in which they live. The government could take significant steps to ensure that food stamp recipients live more balanced lives by only allowing nutritious foods to be purchased with them. This could, in turn, give these people enough energy to become productive citizens. The government shouldn't even present these unhealthy alternatives as a choice to someone who can't afford them..
