    A. Survey PlanThe purpose of this survey is to analyze the progress of labor unions in the United States through the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire. The question being investigated is: To what extent did the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire catalyze progress for American workers? The investigation includes the assessment of unions before and after the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire. Legislation following this notorious event will also be analyzed to properly determine the extent to which this event catalyzed the progress of the workers' rights movement and its overall impact on workers' rights. Primary and secondary sources such as articles, books, and journals will be used throughout this investigation to determine overall progress in workers' rights and the extent to which that progress can be attributed to the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Company.B. Summary of Evidence On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory building was engulfed in flames in the heart of Manhattan. Of the 500 construction workers, 146 of them died – the majority of victims were young women (Phillips, 16-17 years old). In the years leading up to this horrific event, protests and worker strikes (particularly the Uprising of the Twenty Thousand, mainly involving female workers) had taken place, demanding weekly wages instead of every two weeks, and weeks with no more than 52 hours (Burt). Phillips says these protests were led by the League of Women's Unions and also insisted on better working conditions, such as an end to dangerous work, access to exits for workers, and more.
