“Did you know that victims of bullying are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide? » (DoSomething.org). Many children and adolescents in today's society not only face bullying at school, but also online at home. Social media sites, where children are expected to be able to express themselves and not be victims, represent a growing statistic of where bullying takes place (Foxman, Abraham, and Silverman). With more and more children having access to the Internet every day; from blogs to Facebook and even email; these sources make it easier for bullies to harass their victims. Am I saying we should remove all these sites and sources of communication? No! I use them myself, but in my opinion these sites should be monitored at all times, to reduce or even eliminate harassment. I know there are many opposing views on this issue, but if we want to save lives and help build the confidence of our young people, then we need to take a stand against bullying to stop it! Many people protest that cyberbullying laws would impose their privacy. “Invasion of privacy” should never be brought up in front of a person who is the victim of verbal abuse, which would cause that person to harm themselves. There is currently a bill in progress to deal with "cyber cops", some see it as an aid while others, as I mentioned previously, consider it an attack on privacy. However, it is clarified: “A good cyber cop is not only a good investigator. He is also a high-level geek, familiar with the latest technologies; a sophisticated legal thinker capable of striking the right balance between effective online investigation and invasion of privacy…” (Cyberbullying law is a good start).
