Woodworking has been around for millennia or more. People used wood to build shelters, tools and other useful items. There are many types of woodworking. The most common today are marquetry and parquetry, which are both forms of veneer and maintenance. There are many different styles of woodworking, all of which are a very impressive art form. Woodworking has been used by man since the dawn of time. Adam was the first known woodworker. Some of the oldest examples of woodworking date back to the ancient Egyptian and Chinese civilizations. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian designs, and in recent years many examples of Egyptian furniture have been found preserved in tombs. These include stools, chairs, tables, beds and chests (“Wood Carving”, NP). One of the oldest forms of woodworking is called veneer. Veneer is a thin surface layer of valuable wood, glued to a base of less attractive or inexpensive material. Veneer is used to decorate furniture, floors, walls and even paintings or pictures. This can be divided into two different categories; these are parquetry and marquetry. Marquetry is the art of inlaying different woods and other natural materials to create an image. Inlaying consists of placing a material on another surface, but always at surface level. In most cases the inlaid material is wood, but it can be ivory, turtle shells, bark, straw, stone, metal, gems, or other attractive material to the taste of artists. Any flaws are used in the overall effect of the image. Marquetry is often found on the most beautiful furniture. It has existed for thousands of years and is now considered a dying art.
