The education system I went through during high school was like an experience every child goes through. I saw myself and other teenagers struggle to complete homework and projects assigned to us by our teachers. We struggled to read and write essays that evolved as we learned a philosophical outlook. We tried our best to convince our parents or families to “contribute” money to our lives, so that we could buy school supplies. The reality that I have experienced my entire high school career has been brutal in every way. I lived in a poor neighborhood and the school I attended was of poor quality. In high school, I learned that not all students had the same experience as me. Some students have an easier time in high school, while others, including me, have a difficult time. The difference between students’ experiences has shifted along with wealth inequalities. Wealth plays an important role in education and is linked to crucial learning requirements, such as test scores, cognitive development, academic performance, grades, and GPA. High schools are sometimes judged by the test scores reflected by their students. Sean F. Reardon, a New York Times reporter and Stanford professor, claimed that many high school critical tests focus heavily on math and English reading skills. He also said that these are not just tests that high schools give to their students, but also college-level tests, such as the SAT, ACT and EAP. These tests come with a diversity of scores, which poses a barrier for students. This barrier is known to divide students into two distinct categories: “rich and poor students” (Reardon, 2013).
