Essay / Where Men Win Glory, by Jon Krakauer - 1088
Where Men Win Glory is an ironic euphemism for war. The title is ironic because there is nothing glorious about the war or the way it ended Pat Tillman's good life. Jon Krakauer orchestrates this masterpiece with his diligently articulated descriptions and with a timeline stitched from the threads of two worlds. The author's style can best be characterized by his precise, thought-provoking diction and his ability to fluently interject relevant quotes and facts that further persuade the reader to support his cause. Throughout the book, the author's tone exploits resentment toward the activist hierarchy; because through their ingenuity, deception, and manipulation, the military is using Pat's death as propaganda to bolster their support for the war. Additionally, the military covers up the fact that Tillman was the victim of fratricide and deceives the nation into believing that Tillman's end was a valiant fight against insurrectionists. When the truth is revealed and pursued by Dannie - Pat's mother - the army destroys the evidence and pleads guilty to ignorance in rebuttal. This book is shaped by three prodigious aspects that help illustrate Pat's life story. The carefree nature of war, the importance of family, and improvement through change were all important ingredients that created a virtuous life. Each theme, furthermore, challenges me personally to re-evaluate the facts presented to me and the reality presented to me. In doing so, I can gain a solid knowledge base and intellectual prowess capable of questioning any facts presented. War is the means to many ends. An end to ruthless dictators, land disputes and lives – everyone plays their part in the reasoning for war. The war is controllable. This can be avoided; however, once she begins, the bat... middle of paper ... unless it is a matter of national security, and she would strive to improve her disastrous state of self-deprecation. In the case of the family, people today depreciate the value of such a thing even more. Worrying side effects include adultery, fornication, domestic violence and the rampant number of children born to unmarried partners. Where Men Win Glory shows the influence of family in creating enlightened people and the positive effects it can have on others by being in a loving environment – happiness being one of them. Finally, change, as I explained above, is an incredible, life-changing feat. Imagine such a movement on a global scale. If you have not read this book, then you are missing out on life; read this book and interpret your own meanings. Next, I challenge you, as Pat would, to become actively involved in your improvement. See what happens; you might like it.
