Essay / Free essays on Homer's Odyssey: The metaphor of dawn
The metaphor of dawn in The Odyssey Throughout Odysseus' journey, the metaphor of dawn symbolizes his odyssey from immaturity, maturity and development. The progression of the development of Odysseus' strength is like the development of the day, from dawn to dusk. The epithet “rosy-fingered dawn” marks the beginning of Ulysses’ odyssey. After her journey, the epithets "Dawn of the Golden Throne" and "Dawn of the Shining Throne" replace "Rose-Fingered Dawn". However, after returning from his journey, Odysseus plans to rid his house of suitors and the "rosy dawn." “dawn on the fingers” returns. After accomplishing the destruction of the suitors, finally, “Dawn of the Golden Throne” replaces “Rose-Fingered Dawn.” At the beginning of Odysseus's journey, the “rosy-fingered dawn” (10) is referred to as the fresh, young dawn of all that is to come. It also resembles the difficulties of traveling into the future, symbolizing his state of immaturity and lack of experience. This shows how the development of the day resembles the development of Odysseus' strength, addressing the symbolism of "rosy-fingered dawn", perhaps symbolizing Odysseus' current state of youth and immaturity . The “rosy-fingered dawn” returns once more, as a new obstacle is introduced. When “rosy-fingered dawn” (162) returns, another of Odysseus’ obstacles will surely arise. For example, just before Odysseus attempts to rid his house of suitors, the day begins with “rosy-fingered dawn.” In a way, this portends obstacles to come. This example introduces the relationship between Odysseus' strength and the metaphor of dawn. Odysseus, at the beginning of his odyssey, is known as a young leader with educational experiences yet to come. Odysseus is called so when "...no one remembers the princely Odysseus among the people he ruled..." (14). He is presented here as an inexperienced leader, which supports the "rosy-fingered dawn" theory. This shows how young Odysseus is linked to "the rosy-fingered dawn", and how "old" Odysseus, at the end of his odyssey, is linked to "gold" and "the dawn of shining throne.” These comparisons foreshadow another obstacle, now that this idea has arisen, supporting the element of strength is like the development of the day, as stated in the thesis statement. When Odysseus returns from his long journey, “the rosy-fingered dawn” is replaced by “the bright-throated dawn” (151). This symbolizes the accomplishments of his many obstacles as the term "shining" symbolizes tasks accomplished, such as Odysseus' return home..
