Essay / The Giver by Lois Lowry - 1545
The Giver takes place in this futuristic society where the government controls everything. Elders are at the head of society. Their company does not have a name but they call other neighboring companies elsewhere. This company is located on a planet that is probably Earth. The elders assign a job to each person when they reach the age of twelve. There are no birthdays and everyone transitions to the next age on the same day every year. This community is actually very bad because it doesn't give its members the opportunity to keep memories. People cannot see colors and their atmosphere is controlling and monotonous. . A biological mother gives birth to the children and the elders assign them to a family. The concept of this society is very unique because people are not allowed to have memories. Some memories include love, snow, war and music. People don't even know what these things mean. They live in a world of desolation and emptiness. Jonas begins to understand why society is cruel to people later in the book. The elders did this because they did not want the people to revolt against the government. Taking their memories would stop them from thinking about that. The company is also only allowed to accommodate a certain number of people. People and babies who commit wrongdoing or are at fault are released. Liberation means they are killed by an injection. There are 2 main characters in the book, Jonas and the Giver. Jonas is the protagonist of the book. He is a boy living in a controlling society. He lives with his father, his mother and his sister Lily. Jonas is intelligent and very involved in his community. He does well in school and follows the rules. He is somewhat different from his friends because he can see the color red. People in the community can show how important his memories are in everyday life. Memories keep people thinking beyond just making you smart. Jonah had much wisdom. Jonas is described as wise and intelligent because he can see colors. The setting shows how the community is very isolated and boring. Elsewhere, on the other hand, is alive and active. The Giver is a great book because it entertains the reader. The Giver is also an easy reading level. This shows how important memories are. Jonas, the protagonist, captures memories and learns a new meaning in life. I would rate this book 9/10 because the use of language is good and the plot is easy to understand. Lois Lowry does a great job explaining the setting and characters. It's interesting to know what's going on in Jonas's head. Overall this book is great and the author's language is fabulous
