  • Essay / The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant - 1005

The Necklace is a story written with the intention of combining greed, vanity, forbidden desire and wealth. It was written by a famous writer named Guy De Maupassant. The talented writer was born in 1850 and died in 1893. Due to his unique style, he was considered one of the best and most famous writers of the 19th century. Mr. Maupassant managed to write 30 volumes, 300 stories, travel books, articles and poems. Today I was lucky enough to have read one of Maupassant's many short stories called "The Necklace", written in 1884. In my opinion, the story was written with such perfection that it captured my interest. This was much more than I expected in a short story. Throughout the story, it was about a woman named Mathilde. She was overwhelmed by dissatisfaction with her situation in society and wanted more than she could afford. She dreamed of the pleasures of life and complained about the little she had. Her husband was employed at the Ministry of Education and was happy with their situation. They didn't have much money but in his heart, it was enough. Her husband noticed there that she was not happy and, with love and good intention, he brought home an invitation to a party reserved for wealthy society. He hoped it would cheer her up, not knowing that an invitation would change their lives for all of them. At that point in the story, I thought Mathilde was very lucky to have a husband who would go the extra mile to make her happy. My husband sometimes goes the extra mile to please me but I make sure he knows I appreciate him. Mathilde's husband did not have the reaction he hoped for. Instead, she was bitter and started complaining about having nothing to wear. A tactic she uses hoping her husband will give her the money he was saving to buy a gun. Without thinking, he gave it to her but it wasn't enough, she wanted more. She started complaining that she needed jewelry with her outfit. Her husband suggested borrowing one from his wealthy friends. Mathilde then borrowed a necklace that was simply breathtaking from a very close friend named Mrs. Forrestier. She was finally happy and the couple went to the party.
