DescriptionDuring the second week of my placement in the men's room, my mentor asked me to give Mr. Timmy a bed bath and prepare him for breakfast. After the handover, my mentor assigned me a specific bay of the department that I would take care of all week. One of the patients in this bay was Mr Timmy who, unable to mobilize on his own, therefore required assistance with his personal hygiene needs. Mr Timmy had been admitted to hospital with a stroke and dementia which he had suffered from for ages. Before washing my patient, I asked for their consent, as this is required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct (NMC 2008). I also had to consider Mr. Timmy's privacy and dignity by closing the curtains to his stall in the room and covering the body parts I was not yet washing. This was to ensure that there was no unnecessary body exposure and that my patient did not feel embarrassed. Privacy is important to provide a sense of individuality and self-esteem. Indeed, NMC suggests that we treat each patient as an individual, with dignity and respect. Additionally, I made sure at all times to explain what I was going to do to my patient, so made sure they were aware of what I was doing during the procedure. Bed bathing is an essential part of nursing care and a critical time for nurses. to assess the patient's skin, for example bruising, skin lesions and pressure sores. According to (Epstein et al 2011), nurses should be able to provide care that is compassionate and clearly patient-centered. This is also supported by the NHS Constitution (2013) which suggests that every individual should be treated with the highest quality of care by nurses as one of...... middle of paper ...... used to do few things. I would also focus on Mr. Timmy's feelings, because patients are always the first priority in nursing. Action Plan If I were to experience this same or similar situation in the future, I would change the way I communicated with the patient during the procedure. I also read the hospital guidelines and policy regarding bed bathing, as well as the ethical guidelines (NMC, 2008) on treating patients. I would also improve my theoretical knowledge in the field of bed bathing and apply it practically during practice in future internships. I would also work alongside my mentor and the other experienced nursing assistants when giving bed baths to improve my confidence. However, I think that when I perform this skill again in the future, I will be a little more confident because I now know where I did right and wrong..
