  • Essay / Essay 2: Serious Problems Plaguing Chicago - 895

Every morning on my way to school, I often pick up the Red Eye newspaper and read the latest news happening in Chicago. As I flip through the pages, I often see a section that shows tracking of homicides in the city of Chicago. This section of the log shows many deaths occurring over the course of a month in a specific area. Therefore, like this newspaper homicide tracker, the following articles talk about the same stories of homicides that took place in the city of Chicago years ago. In the book The Devil in the White City by Eric Larson illustrates the terrible events related to crime, violence and disease all leading to death; The Coldest Case: The Valentine's Day Massacre by Jonathan Eig describes the tragic killing of six men by a mob, making Chicago a gang murder capital; The Untouchables by Eliot Ness recounts the conflict Eliot Ness experienced while trying to bankrupt gangster Al Capone, and For the Thrill: Leopold, Loeb and the Murder That Shocked the Jazz Age Chicago by Simon Baatz recounts the case of Justice Clarence. Darrow who had to defend two boys against the death penalty. The combination of these three stories shows serious issues such as crime, corruption, and violence that plague Chicago. In these stories, one of the most serious problems plaguing Chicago is crime. Crime in the article The Coldest Case: The St. Valentine's Day Massacre is considered the most astonishing crime in Chicago's astonishing criminal history (Eig). Larson illustrates a crime scene: “He spotted mutilated bodies on the ground and inhaled the stench of blood. This isn't the only historical problem plaguing Chicago when it comes to crime, but the book For the Thrill of it by Simon Baatz also explains its criminal past. Baat...... middle of paper ......ite City should be given priority consideration. Very often people can see on the news that crime happens every day and violence and corruption are part of it. To promote a better society for future generations, these serious issues must be adequately addressed to minimize the many deaths in the city of Chicago. Works Cited Baatz, Simon. For fun.
