  • Essay / Concussion Talk - 908

In her TedTalk, “The Game That Can Give You Ten Extra Years of Life,” Jane McGonigal explains how she created a game called “Jane the Concussion Slayer” to help her overcoming a concussion that didn't work. heal properly. McGonigal describes to her audience the different levels and power-ups she created to deal with the aftermath of her unhealed concussion which left symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, memory loss and a mental fog. On top of that, McGonigal had to avoid anything that triggered his symptoms such as: writing, video games, work, emails, exercise, alcohol, etc. In doing so, she believed the game she created helped her approach these symptoms more creatively. , determination and optimism. McGonigal then concludes his speech. Since McGonigal is a gamer, she convinces her audience that playing games can help get through tough times by sharing with the audience the game she created for her concussion. In the game, she adopted a secret identity, recruited allies, fought villains, and activated power-ups. By playing this game, in just a few days, McGonigal noticed that she had overcome the fog of depression and anxiety. (McGonigal 8:21 – 8:53). She then interacts with her audience by having them play and successfully complete the first four SuperBetter quests. SuperBetter Quests are simple games that can help an individual achieve the three-to-one ratio of positive emotions, such as snapping their fingers and raising their fist above their head. Once the audience has successfully completed their four missions, these three missions are: attend all classes, complete the appropriate assignments that are due, and establish a connection/network with a new person each day. Attending all classes is an important mission as new subjects are taught every day and it is a good habit to be present in class as you will establish a better connection not only with your peers but also with your teacher. Attending classes daily is an important factor in how one approaches homework. For example, if you attend classes every day, you will better understand what is expected and when things need to be done. Whereas if you were to skip classes regularly, you would not know what is expected and the lack of effort shows up not only to your teachers but also to your peers; causing them to dissociate from you. Building a network with people from different backgrounds is one of the three main daily missions in the game because it can help me in the long run, in terms of career and personal needs. McGonigal expresses her amazement at her readers' reaction and responses to her game. She received messages and videos telling her how playing a game of life changed their lives for the better (McGonigal 9:41 – 10 :23). That being said, I think defining these three things as my main missions is a great way to achieve the positive emotion of three to one.
