Essay / Advance Practice Nursing - 1479
Introduction “Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a generic term given to a registered nurse who has acquired a specialized knowledge base, complex decision-making skills, and clinical skills for prolonged practice” . This definition of APN was adapted from the International Council of Nurses in 2005 by the Nursing Council of Singapore (Kannusamy, 2007). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing defines advanced practice nursing as registered nurses prepared to the next level in nursing as a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse midwife, or certified nurse anesthetist to provide care direct to patients. (Ruel and Motyka, 2009). As you can see, there are actually many different definitions of advanced nursing practice depending on countries and their contexts. Advanced practice nurse (APN) education began in the United States in the 1960s and the APN role has already been implemented in approximately 24 countries, excluding the USA. (Nieminen, Mannevaara and Fagerstrom, 2011). However, in Singapore, the APN was introduced quite late compared to the foreign context. Singapore began developing advanced practice nursing (APN) roles in 2001 and progressed consecutively with the introduction by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as one of the clinical nursing careers (Schober, 2010). The APN was launched in Singapore. due to increases in chronic diseases, an aging population, higher levels of patient acuity, and shortened hospital stays (Kannusamy, 2006). Another article taken from abroad to compare with the Singapore article, stated that APNs were initiated because they are needed in tertiary care, monitoring of patients with chronic diseases and in primary secondary prevention . .....cohost.com.libproxy.nyp.edu.sg/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=1e52b81a-9daa-4e5e-9eed-231e7261315d%40sessionmgr4003&vid=14&hid=4103Nieminen, A., Mannevaara, B., & Fagerstrom, L.
