Essay / Things Fall Apart Race Analysis - 888
The Clash of the RacesAfrica has always been the center of colonization for many European countries. With its colonization, stereotypes appeared according to which the African was inhuman, primitive and savage compared to the humanity of civilized Europeans. The traditional model simplifies stereotypes by saying that Africans are bad and Europeans are good. Fortunately, it's not as clear-cut as that. In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, the Igbo of Umuofia and the British of Europe have the good and bad sides of their respective races, revealing that traditional perceptions of these races are not entirely accurate. Through their systems of government, justice systems, and religion, both parties have positive and negative effects on each other. As the traditional model goes, Europeans had a positive effect on the Africans of Umuofia. First, British missionaries built a hospital for the village residents. The villagers state that “the white man's medicine was quick and effective” (181). They shared European knowledge of medicine with the villagers, which greatly improved their health and general well-being. In addition, the Europeans built a school for the inhabitants of Umuofia, allowing them to access employment. In particular, “a few months were enough to make someone a court clerk or even a clerk (181)”. The schools also taught the villagers advanced and knowledge-based positions. For example, “Those who stayed longer became teachers” (181-182). This transmission of knowledge has helped African society become more educated and find a profession in the future. Unlike the traditional model, the Africans in the village of Umuofia are civil and humane. Umofia village has a community... middle of paper ...... the way it was imposed on them was inhumane. It is therefore certain that Europeans also had a dark side. In summary, if there is one The reality is that the issue is not as clear-cut as the traditional model suggests. The people of Umuofia have a dark side, but it is also evident that they also have a civilized and human side. Likewise, Europeans in general demonstrate both humanity and inhumanity by massacring an entire tribe and imprisoning many Africans who do not comply. They also try to enlighten Africans by providing them with jobs and medicine. In conclusion, we cannot simply say that Europeans are superior and Africans are inferior. In today's society many stereotypical people exist and will exist forever, but aren't these people supposed to progress and not return to segregation ??
