  • Essay / Presentation on how sport brings people together

I will address the view of sport as wrong and something that separates people. I think sport doesn't always have to be a negative thing. Sports can serve as a unifier between many people around the world who support the same team. My speech will show the other side of the debate.SLIDE 1: Sports can act as a unifier because when many people support the same team, they instantly become friendly even if they don't know each other. Joe Humphrey said that "sport is essentially anti-family and encourages unethical and discriminatory behavior." This is the exact opposite of what happens when people come together to support their team. It unifies people of all races and religions. When a person supports their team, they don't care if the people around them are different, because they focus on the unity of all the people around them who support them. SLIDE 2: Sports create friendships between people who normally wouldn't communicate. This is great against racism because when people support the same ideals, they have something in common. This encourages communication between people and friendships between different people. Joe Humphrey says that sports creates "barriers between groups", which I think is false since people form friendships with all religions because sports unifies people when they support the same team. SLIDE 3: Sport unites nations. Sport unites nations and creates peace between countries since each country wants to invite other countries to the world cup. This creates friendships between nations. Countries try to be friendly with other countries to create better and more enjoyable sporting events. Nations bond and help each other through sports, particularly the World Cup, which is a way for countries to show support for teams and unification of people. SLIDE 4: Sport has no language. Sports does not need words, it can unite people because people who speak different languages understand each other and other people who support their favorite team. People who speak different languages don't have to worry about language barriers, because there are no problems with misunderstanding in sports. The rules are the same, different sporting events are similar and people feel like they fit in anywhere. SLIDE 5: Sports create similarities by bringing people together in one place, creating similarity between people in the things they love to do. People find similarities in other people because they give people a chance to show who they are when they support the same things..
