It's easy to think that all homeless people are the same because of the circumstances they find themselves in, but they are a group of extremely diverse people. Despite their origins, there is no denying that they should have access to basic human needs such as food and shelter. There are many places in the city dedicated to serving the needs of the homeless, like the New Orleans Mission which is a shelter, but I think the government can do a lot more. While providing more safe places is certainly beneficial, I believe we need to look at the situations that lead to homelessness. For example, one of the demographic groups I have encountered most during my service to the homeless is veterans. These are people who courageously dedicated their lives to serving the United States, and when they return from war, sometimes they have very little to return to. Some veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and have received little or no treatment for it. Due to lack of treatment, they are unable to live a normal life and often end up on the streets. I believe that if more government programs were in place to ease the transition to civilian life, such as job training and therapy, the number of homeless people living on the streets would decrease. This program allowed my personal values ​​to evolve. I admit, I thought the homeless were the ones who were too lazy to find a job. I was very narrow-minded and was able to learn that there are so many reasons that contribute to a person ending up in this type of situation. I was always taught not to judge others and that's exactly what I did. Christians strive to be more like Christ and treat others like him. So I learned to do it.
