  • Essay / Everyman - 365

EverymanThe play “Everyman” is about a complacent Everyman who is informed by Death of his impending end. The play shows the hero's progression from despair and fear of death to a "Christian resignation which is the prelude to redemption." Throughout the play, Everyman is deserted by things he thought were of great importance, represented by characters who take the names of the things they represent. Throughout the play, Everyman asks the characters to accompany him on his journey toward death. It begins with Fellowship, his friends, who promise to accompany him until they are informed of the destination. They abandon Everyman at that point. He calls on people closer to him, Kindred and Cousin, his parents. They also promise to "live and die together", but when asked to accompany Everyman, they remember the things he never did for them and abandon him. Every man then appeals to Goods, to his material goods. Goods explains that they can't make the trip with him, so he's abandoned again. Good deeds are then invoked. They say that even if they want to make the trip, they can't right now. They advise everyone to speak to Knowledge. Knowledge is that which leads every man on the path of purification. They confess first, which gives him penance. Once he has done his penance, Good Deeds is able to rise from the ground. They then appeal to discretion, strength, the five spirits and beauty. At first they follow him on his journey, but when they approach his grave, they flee as quickly as they can. When he finally sinks into his grave, the only thing that accompanies him are Good Deeds..
