Essay / Year-Round Schooling: The Way Forward - 1505
Year-Round Schooling: The Way ForwardMany people think that no school should have a year-round schedule because it is not not good for children to be in school all year round. Despite this sentiment, many schools have changed their schedule to operate year-round, benefiting their students as well as their teachers. Year-round enrollment (YRS), also known as year-round education (YRE), is a good way to improve students' education. It improves student education by providing more frequent breaks and giving students the opportunity to participate in intersessions. The first year-round school in the United States was in Bluffton, Indiana in 1904. The purpose of changing their schedule to a year-round one was to increase the capacity of school construction, student achievement, to minimize learning loss during the summer and to provide remedial lessons during intersessions. From then until 1998 and 1999, there were more than two thousand year-round schools in the United States, Canada, and the Pacific Rim. Year-round timetables may consist of two types of systems, single-track and multi-track with attendance programs or a combination of the two. The single track allows the entire student body to follow the same schedule, as well as the staff. Multi-tracking separates students and teachers into groups. Each group is assigned a different track. The benefits of multi-track programs are reduced crowding, reduced class sizes, and the ability for teachers to work year-round (Palmer & Bemis, 1999). In addition to single-track and multi-track systems, there are other types of programs. hours all year round. 60-20 and 60-15, 45-15 and 45-10 and Concept 6 are the most common types. Providing sports between sessions gives students more time during school sessions to study and do homework, as well as more time to sleep to help them perform better in class. During frequent breaks, or between sessions if teachers choose not to teach, this gives them more time to prepare better lesson plans and have more energy to teach. During school sessions, due to frequent interruptions in schooling throughout the year, students and teachers experience less workload over a given period compared to students and teachers who attend a school with a timetable traditional. This reduces stress on teachers and students, making everyone a little happier..
