Most of the “old immigrants” were educated and if they were not, they came for an education and tried as hard as they could to make it in America. Additionally, if they were not already trained in a trade, they were eager to learn new skills and improve on what they already knew. They would also work on learning English if they didn't already know it. Some already knew how to read, write and speak English before their arrival. The “new immigrants” were almost completely opposed to the “old immigrants.” The “new immigrants” came to America without any education and did not understand the meaning of knowledge and its significance. They also knew very little English and saw no reason to learn it. After the first generation of immigrants realized the importance of education in the United States, they pushed their children and the second generation to receive a proper education.
