Conflict of passion and reason in Antigone by Sophocles “Ah Creon! Is there no more man in the world” (Sophocles page #). Greek theater played a big role in Greece. Citizens were supposed to learn from the mistakes made in tragedies. Citizens should have learned not to be as citizens or people. In Antigone, written by Sophocles, there are two main characters, Antigone and Creon. They are both strong-willed and stubborn people. Both do not want to change, they seal the other's destiny with their stubbornness, their myopia, their extreme beliefs and their pride. Antigone is full of rage. They are so similar that they cannot see. Even though they seem very different, Creon and Antigone share many similarities throughout the story. Antigone is extremely independent. For example, at the beginning. of the story, when Antigone talks with Ismene, she asks for her help. When Ismene refuses, she is furious with her. Ismene then decides to act independently. Creon is also very independent. He refuses to accept anyone's opinions except his own. When his son Haimon comes to speak to him, he refuses to listen, claiming that Haimon is "a stricken girl" (Sophocles page #) and corrupt. Teirsesais comes and tells him a morbid prophecy. Creon won't listen either. He claims that Teirsesais was corrupted by money, like many prophets of the time. He finally listens to Charagous when he is reminded that Teiresias was never wrong. Antigone has no problem working alone either. She demonstrates this when she escapes all the guards who were protecting Polynices' corpse. ......middle of paper......rather in a balance between the two.1. Underline the titles of the plays.2. When quoting, always cite the quotation by placing in parentheses the author's name and the page on which the quotation is found.3. Your thesis statement should state exactly what you are discussing in your paper. If you dedicate a paragraph to stubbornness, a paragraph to short-sightedness, etc., each of these points should be listed in the thesis statement. Both unwilling to change, they seal the other's destiny through their stubbornness, myopia, their extreme beliefs and their pride.4. Much of your article seems to be a plot summary. You don't have to tell the whole story when you write your article. The quotes are enough to explain what is happening in the play. Focus only on proving your point of view and why your point of view is important to the game..
