Essay / Cultural Bias Essay - 1037
When I reflect on my past experiences, cultural biases, beliefs, and values have played a significant role in my decision-making. Gradually, I learned that understanding patients' culture, beliefs and values can be a challenge; however, participation in providing culturally competent care at work improves knowledge and skills in caring for culturally diverse populations. Additionally, filtering my values and attitudes as well as those of other cultures will prevent me from stereotyping. Mainly, the past suicidal events of my brother-in-law and my sister's friend gave me the strength to raise awareness of the risks associated with mental illness and the importance of early treatment. As an aspiring nurse practitioner, eager to understand and help my patients, I believe that becoming aware of and recognizing my shortcomings will help me succeed in providing culturally competent care, especially to those vulnerable.
