  • Essay / Canada's Multicultural Identity - 1098

Who are Canadians? There is no clear definition. A thousand years ago, Canadians were Native Americans and 300 years ago, they were French settlers. Today, there is no single definition of who we are. People from all over the world have immigrated to Canada. We are no longer fur hat wearing Dubois of the court, nor soldiers of the British army. Very few Canadians can say they are truly from North America. We are a hodgepodge of all different ethnicities, religions and languages, but all Canadians share one thing:; their house. We live in such a diverse society with people from all over the world. But this culture and this way of life did not appear by magic; it took years of interactions and influences. Thanks to French Canadians' continued struggle for cultural and linguistic recognition, the success story of Vimy Ridge, and our unique Canadian Bill of Rights, Canada has become an independent, multicultural nation. A great man once said: “Love your neighbor. like yourself…” Unfortunately for Canada, this was not always the case. For many years, disagreements have existed between the two main cultural faiths of Canada, the French and the English. Both tried to demoralize each other on religious, linguistic, cultural and political aspects. Throughout Canadian history, the French and English have clashed many times, but three major historical events tore the relationship apart for Canada: the Red River Rebellion, the conscription dilemma of the World War I and the October Crisis of the FLQ in Quebec in 1970. events in Canadian history that "divided" the French-English Canadian connection. This problem plagues our country today and many steps have been taken to try to improve the medium of paper.
