“Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff is a suspense type story, with an unexpected twist at the end, while “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner could far into the horror genre, due to the confusing atmosphere. These two short stories have similar emphases on symbolism, foreshadowing, settings, atmosphere, and themes; with this in mind, they also have many differences, such as the style of the writer. Both stories begin by describing the settings, the cold winter wonderland of "Hunters in the Snow" and the musty old Gothic-style house of "A Rose." for Emilie. Both Wolff and Faulkner used settings as symbols, which also helps create the atmosphere of their story. For example, the snowy weather in "Hunters in the Snow" symbolizes the cold distance of the three men's so-called "friendship" coming to an end, while the changes in Grierson's house could symbolize how Emily had changed, since his father's death. The way Faulkner describes how Emily's house and hair changed throughout the story symbolizes how stubborn and carefree Emily became after her father's death. Both beginnings of the story include foreshadowing of their unforeseen endings. For "Hunters in the Snow", one such foreshadowing was after Kenny made fun of Frank about his crush on the babysitter, Frank threatened Kenny by saying "You're asking for it", which foreshadowed the Unexpected death of Kenny. For "A Rose for Emily", the opening paragraph describing the house as a "fallen monument" and the town going to Emily's funeral foreshadowed Emily's digression. Another similarity between these two stories lies in their themes.
