  • Essay / Mohammed: a true prophet? - 1132

For one man to claim to be God's messenger centuries ago and for his word to still be believed today is powerful enough. There are approximately 1.3 billion Muslims in the world today, which means that one in five people believe that Muhammad was indeed God's messenger. Muhammad, like other so-called religious “messengers of God,” can be considered either a legendary figure or a raving madman. In today's society, if anyone claimed to have revelations from God, they would be considered crazy. Travel to any major city in the world and you will see dozens of prophets claiming that they communicate directly with God and that they are the single voice that the people should listen to and follow. In this essay, I will discuss whether or not Muhammad was truly the "messenger of God" or whether he simply created his revelations out of mental illness. First, many may wonder why God would wait so late in Muhammad's life to begin his communications with him. ? Jesus, who Christians believe to be the son of God, preached his messages from the beginning. If God wanted Muhammad to lead so many people to follow him, why would he wait until the last years of his life? Many will say that it takes a long time to understand who our true self is and that it is life's experiences that make us the people we are destined to be. From the beginning, Muhammad seemed to have deep compassion for others. In one case, before taking his title as "messenger of God", he gained a lot of respect from people by resolving a conflict. However, in looking at this conflict, I am looking for where the resolution and use of knowledge comes into play. The situation arose while Muhammad was repairing the Ka'bah, various clans of the Quraysh were arguing over who would have the privilege to place the conflict. Black stone in its place. As violence was about to erupt, the people chose to appeal to Muhammad and make him the mediator between the two sides. He placed the Black Stone on his mantle and asked all the clan leaders to hold its edges and lift it, then he placed the Black Stone in the designated place with his own hands. This is where I find myself searching; how did this resolve the conflict?
