Essay / Theme of Death in The Great Gatsby - 1009
The Great Gatsby is a novel written in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In his most famous book, Fitzgerald writes about American society in the 1920s. After World War I, the economy was booming. The economy was experiencing very rapid growth and unprecedented prosperity. People started to focus on their money and wealth, they gradually got lost, lost many traditions and morals. Gatsby's death can illustrate the corrupt society of the 1920s. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald points out several ideas to prove that the society of the 1920s was realistic. Fitzgerald explained his satirical portrayal through Gatsby's rise to wealth, his death, and Daisy's vanity. The death of Jay Gatsby illustrates Fitzgerald's satirical portrait: Daisy symbolizes beauty and wealth. She may have loved Gatsby in the past, but she changed after marrying Tom. Tom comes from old money and gives Daisy the prosperous type of life. She was used to it when she found Gatsby, Gatsby still loves her even though he noticed that Daisy has changed. “'Her voice is full of money,' he says suddenly” (page 128), Gatsby notices how wealth has changed Daisy from the woman he knew. During Daisy's long waiting period, money has changed society, the value placed on things, and people behave badly. Five years have passed and Gatsby realizes that their love is no longer the same. He wanted to prove he had succeeded by getting Daisy back. Daisy is the final proof he needs to show his success. Daisy wanted to keep Gatsby in her life, but didn't want to lose her relationship with Tom. From Gatsby's death we can say that Daisy is a very selfish person. Daisy was actually the person who killed Myrtle, but she didn't give herself up. She chose to let Gatsby take responsibility for her death. “I called Daisy half an hour after we found him, I called her instinctively and without hesitation. But she and Tom had left early in the afternoon and had taken their luggage with them. (Page 172) Daisy and Tom left right after the accident, so as not to get involved. Daisy was in love with Gatsby and when Gatsby died for her, she left him. This shows how selfish Daisy is. Gatsby loves Daisy more than him, but Daisy is the opposite, she only cares about herself. Fitzgerald satirizes the society of the 1920s, the mores and traditions of the upper class changed, women became more independent and focused on themselves and not their role as a wife or wife.
