    Floods and the washing away of houses were caused by the rupture of the Fujinuma irrigation dam in Sukagawa. The flooding of the dam caused many people to drown and contributed to the 90% of drowning deaths. Soil liquefaction is caused by the force applied by an earthquake and this is where the soil behaves as if it were liquid. At a water purification center in Tohoku, the floor sank a meter. Many coastal towns were destroyed as a result of the tsunami that followed the first tremors of the ground.
