  • Essay / Good and evil in Bless Me, Ultima - 873

Good and evil in Bless Me, UltimaIn Rodolfo Anaya's novel, Bless Me, Ultima, the author uses different parameters in order to develop the sense of good and bad of Antonio. An example of this would be at Rosie's, the local brothel. For Antonio, Rosie tempted his brothers and was the cause of their sins. In one of Antonio's dreams, three figures “silently beckoned” (p. 65) for Antonio to enter the “house of sinful women” (p. 156). Antonio saw his brothers enter and he told Andrew, the last of the three, not to enter. Andrew told Tony that he would wait until Tony lost his innocence and only then would Andrew enter the brothel. So, for Antonio, seeing Andrew in the “house of evil” (p. 156) was a confirmation of Tony's lost innocence and Tony wanted to remain innocent forever. Another example of Tony's sense of right and wrong evolving through the use of setting. is Tony's own house. For him, his home brought him warmth and security. When Tenorio and his men come to his house to take Ultima away, Tony's father "would not let any man invade his house" (p. 123). This gave Tony the confidence that as long as his father was there, he would be protected. Antonio's mother made the home a loving and caring place. She would always pamper Antonio and give him the affection he needed whenever he needed it. The morning after Tony saw Lupito killed, Ultima told Tony's mother not to be too hard on Antonio; he had a rough night last night. His mother puts her arms around Tony and holds him, saying he's "just a boy, still a baby" (page 28). The Virgin also makes the atmosphere of Antonio's house peaceful and protected. Tony loves the Virgin Mary because “she always forgave” (p. 42). Tony thought she was “full of a calm, peaceful love” (page 42) with which she filled the house. The most important person who contributed to the quality of Antonio's house was Ultima. She made Antonio feel like her presence filled the house with safety, love, and a sense of security. When Tony saw Lupito being killed, it was Ultima who calmed him down. Every time he had a nightmare, Ultima was there to comfort Antonio and "[he] could sleep again" (p..
