In recent studies, it has been proven that sports drinks like Gatorade, PowerAde and Muscle Milk are not entirely truthful about their nutritional value and to the impact they will have on their consumers. These studies make an argument that water might be better overall than any of these drinks, although water may taste bland, it might be the better choice for athletes around the world. Gatorade is one of the most famous sports drinks on the market today. It was introduced to the market in 1965 in the laboratories of the University of Florida. Gatorade was used to hydrate players on their football team in extreme weather conditions. Gatorade has also been used to replenish key nutrients lost during play. This feat proved effective when the Florida Gators won the 1966 Orange Bowl against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Today, Gatorade has become the largest sports drink company of all time, being the official sports drink of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and many others sports teams and organizations. Gatorade also sponsors some of the world's greatest sports competitors, including Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning and many other world-renowned athletes. The problem with Gatorade is that it is designed precisely for someone who needs to replenish lost electrolytes and carbohydrates after or during a vigorous workout. Plus, it's way too sweet with 31 grams of sugar per 12 ounces of Gatorade. It is not made for frequent use if you do no physical activity or if you do little. Studies have shown that overconsumption of Gatorade can lead to weight gain, vitamin toxicity, hypernatremia, hypertension, and elevated blood sugar.
