Essay / An Alternative to Expensive Colleges and Universities
College costs have climbed at a faster rate than health care costs over the past few decades. These rising costs have negatively impacted our national debt and student debt currently stands at over $1 trillion. The solution to this growing problem is to make all public higher education free. Students' goals of developing their minds and learning for the sole purpose of being educated are undermined by the high costs of tuition. It is important for our nation to be educated, and a compromise is not difficult to find to allow as many students as possible to achieve their higher education goals. In Robert Samuels' article, “For Public Colleges, the Best Tuition is Tuition-Free,” its primary purpose is clearly stated; tuition at public colleges should be free. In this article, Samuels offers many feasible solutions to this currently outstanding problem. Samuels says the cost of making all public universities free would be about $97 billion and $33 billion for community colleges, based on what the federal and state governments already spend on Pell Grants and financial assistance. By using current resources more efficiently, Samuels explains his ultimate goal. He proves his point that by making public education free, our tax systems, our tax revenue, and our national debt will all decrease. In 1947, it was recommended to then-President Harry Truman that education be both free and universal at all levels of education. education, as a means of expanding financial accessibility to higher education. The commission's report stated: “It is evident that free and universal access to education, in terms of the interest, ability, and need of the student, must be a major goal of American education. Now is the time to bring education to the middle of paper. The movement will only come if students, parents, and all right-thinking Americans come together to demand it now.
