  • Essay / The Great Firewall: The Negative Impact of the Internet...

Due to the blocking of "sensitive" or "harmful" information, blogs and social media tools are not as open to used to express oneself freely on any subject, especially political issues. The “Great Firewall” affects Chinese citizens, but also students who decide to study abroad in China. Most students have left their countries where there are few or no restrictions. These international students must keep in mind that the topics covered in China are sensitive, and sometimes even restricted. They need to know the boundaries between what is acceptable and what is not. There is no need to immediately and completely unblock Internet censorship, but progress should be made to ease restrictions and allow greater access for Chinese citizens. There are internet restrictions for certain things in other parts of the world, but they are not as severe or as intensified as in China. Once again, China's internet censorship has fostered a lack of education and culture that allows its citizens to think creatively and express themselves for themselves.
