In the play "The Tragedy of Macbeth", William Shakespeare presents many examples of foreshadowing that attract the reader and show an interesting and unique way of telling a story. From the beginning (Act 1, Scene 1), three witches appear who are the main sources of foreshadowing and begin the whole story by agreeing to meet again "when the battle is lost and won". Later in the play, the actual prophecies given by the three witches occur when they meet Macbeth and Banquo, then greet Macbeth with three titles "Thane of Glamis", "Thane of Cawdor", and "King Beyond". Subsequently, the witches only meet Macbeth again (Act 4) and during this meeting Macbeth learns three other prophecies which foreshadow his life to come. The three prophecies are an armed head, a bloody child, and a crowned child with a tree in his hand. Macbeth considers these prophecies not as absolute truths but as predictions that could come true depending on whether he thinks they are good or not. For example at the beginning when the witches declare that they will see each other again "When the battle is lost and won". Additionally, when the three witches meet Macbeth and Banquo, they greet Macbeth with three titles. Eventually, when the three witches appear to him again, they provide him with three more prophecies that ring the truth of what is about to happen. The use of these characters in foreshadowing adds to the “drama” of the tragedy. Macbeth had been foreshadowed or prophesied that he would commit these acts and die; he knew some of them and still didn't see them. This adds to the brilliance of Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth.
