  • Essay / Social Roles and Problems - 1398

A status is an occupation of position of a person in a group which is in relation to others, an achieved status is one which is chosen by a person or which an individual gets. This is only possible in a society where everyone has a certain degree of control and choice. Ascribed status is one that is neither earned nor even chosen by oneself, for example at birth you are born male or you are female. Given my ascribed status as a Latina girl, daughter of my parents, and sister of my siblings, they will remain unchanged throughout my lifeline since they are distinct characteristics that I was born with. Being a friend to my group members, a student and a classmate to my colleagues at school, these are my acquired statuses because all of them have been acquired as I grew up since my birth and they can change depending on time and place. Lifestyle can also influence status since, under certain conditions, it can prevent a person from moving from a certain status to a very different one. As I grow up, I might acquire another status, such as that of mother, which is an ascribed status, and because of my professional ambitions, I might as well be an employee of a particular company, which will create another acquired status in my lifebuoy. Being a daughter and sister in the family gives me an important role to play in society since I must respect my parents and my brothers and sisters and love them too; this creates good relationships within the family. As a student and a classmate of my colleagues, I must create friendly conditions for my classmates to interact with me without any fear. I must love and respect these friends without any favor, this will create a better image towards other members of society...... middle of paper ......ines who motivate their belief. This creates conflict between individuals in which everyone does not understand what role he or she should play. It is evident that social roles are always flexible and can change regardless of time or place. We are not required to meet the standards assigned to us with a high sense of compliance. Instead, each person plays a different role assigned to them based on social status, norms, resources, or punishments evoked by our performance from others.
