Unlike war machines, soldiers have feelings, and the feelings they carry have their mass. In the story, the author states that the objects soldiers carry during the Vietnam War are "intangible", and yet these intangible objects have their tangible mass. The author later adds that soldiers have "the greatest fear of blushing" and "reputation." (O'Brien 348) Each of the soldiers is afraid of being a coward and would rather die at the enemy's bare hands than die of dishonor. Yet, in this way, it motivates the soldiers to continue fighting until the end, so that they do not easily give up fighting on the battlefield, just as they fear being called "cowards". Moreover, soldiers not only carry their armed conflict, they also carry the feelings of love. In the story, it is stated that Jimmy Cross does not do what he is supposed to do as a first lieutenant when he and his team operate on the mission. Instead, he thinks deeply about his love Martha. Because of this, one of his soldiers, Ted Lavender, died as a result of their operation. (O'Brien 341) Jimmy Cross has a very deep feeling with a girl named Martha. Cross carries everything Martha sent him to the battlefield, like love letters and good luck pebbles. However, these things remind Cross of Martha.
