  • Essay / The importance of solving the problem of childhood obesity

Childhood obesity is not an issue to be taken lightly. In fact, it has proven to be a very serious health problem, not only within our state, but also within the United States as a nation. Much like the size of our residents, the problem of obesity has become much larger than before. One might wonder what can be fully attributed to this way of life. In fact, personally, I don't believe that the problem of obesity can be blamed on any one problem. At this point in human history, we have been unfortunate enough to find that it results from genetics, overeating, an inactive lifestyle, or just poor self-care in general. The most unfortunate but undeniable aspect of obesity is that it is a problem that our children have had the misfortune of inheriting. While the country may be facing this problem, it is one that medical professionals and the general public have already recognized, to the point of taking action. Say no to plagiarism. Municipalities across the country have different statistics regarding their obesity rates. Additionally, children, regardless of their genetics, should have equal opportunities to become who they want to be while they are still young. To prevent future childhood obesity, West Virginia, among other states in the Union, has implemented legislative plans to work with NPAP. (Abildso, et. al, 2016) This plan recognizes the growing rate of obesity among children in our country and the need to make significant changes. In West Virginia, the lack of bachelor's degrees and physical activity is significantly higher than the U.S. average. In addition, the population is predominantly rural. (Abildso, et. al, 2016) This leads me to believe that a lack of education and appropriate resources can be attributed to the extraordinarily high childhood obesity rate in West Virginia. Additionally, those who live in the countryside, unlike densely populated areas, have less access to health resources. According to a study conducted in Charleston, West Virginia's largest city, 78 percent of children surveyed met the criteria to be considered obese or have high blood pressure. (Co, et. al, 2015) Due to the high number of homeschooled students and students in rural communities, a five-year plan was implemented in the state of West Virginia. (Partington, et. al, 2015) This plan focuses specifically on children. From a young age, West Virginia children will be taught about physical activity as well as eating habits. Unlike a traditional physical education class, children participating in programs that follow this plan will learn the importance of class content. The aim is to encourage children to be wary of their physical condition in order to avoid the many obesity opportunities available to them and their parents. The main contributors to these discoveries have been academic minds. In the case of children, one would hope that a nurse or other health professional would never be able to give them news of a negative health problem that they do not have the capacity to understand. However, it is professionals in the medical field who have conducted the studies necessary to reach these conclusions. In turn, this facilitated the passage of necessary legislation to encourage children to pay attention to.
