  • Essay / The Birth of an American Nation - 780

The birth of an American nation began with the establishment of various colonies along the east, roughly adjacent to the abundant Atlantic Ocean. Colonies can be divided into 4 units. The colonies that settled in the New World were New England, Chesapeake, the Middle Colonies, and the Carolinas. European immigrants saw themselves as the new nation's original inhabitants, but faced the reality that Native Americans had already settled in the territory. What would follow were years of hardship and war. The Chesapeake Colony had begun with the first establishment of the English colony of Jamestown in 1607. The English immigrants who established Jamestown were indentured servants, who agreed to work for a company in an effort to gain passage to the New World . The New England Colony was also created similar to the Chesapeake Colony due to the fact that English immigrants seemed to escape life in England for a freer, ungoverned life in the New World. The middle colonies were made up of a variety of different European natives. The Carolinas were kept under the brutal rule of the then British Empire. Although the exploration of new lands led to an influx of various distinct people from the European continent, not all reasons to migrate to the New World were the same. . Differences in migration motivations range from work to religious freedom. The immigrants who arrived in what would become the Chesapeake Colony were indentured servants who were part of the London Company, a private company that provided work to servants in exchange for travel to the New World. The reason for establishing the Chesapeake colony differed from that established during the mid-colonial era and paved the way for what would become a diverse America. People were allowed to think freely if there was a range of ideas rather than just one central belief. The middle colonies could have been positively influenced by the diversity of ideas and could have been more tolerable and fewer disputes could have arisen. Tensions would have been reduced, allowing for a more comfortable environment in which citizens would feel welcomed rather than rejected. Another factor that could be attributed to the high survival of the Middle Colonies could be their fertile and booming economy. The central colonies placed a strong emphasis on the fur trade, making it a lucrative market. The climate of the Middle Colonies allowed for abundant harvests. These are the factors that I believe make the middle colonies more likely to survive among the other colonies..
