Essay / Grit in Education - 985
When I started kindergarten at the age of four, I did not know how to speak or write the English language. I wanted to be one of the few Hispanic students who had the ability to communicate with American children. In “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, Alexie was a Native American who wanted to expand his education unlike other Indian children. He taught himself to read by reading many books like his father did. Alexie overcame his fear of being different from other Native Americans. Learning to read in English has improved the chances of a successful education. The beginning of my educational development began in kindergarten. The environment was new to me and I felt out of place due to the diversity of cultures around me. At the beginning of class, my teacher, Ms. Pinto, asked me my name. I didn't understand what she was asking me, so I didn't answer. When she asked other children their names, one of the English speakers said "Juan" - a traditional name for a Mexican, so I understood that she had tried to ask me my name. While the teacher was explaining what we were going to do in class, I wanted to ask her a question. I didn't know the language she spoke and she didn't know mine, so I felt like I couldn't communicate. I discovered that the class contained students of two races, including a smaller number of Americans and mostly Hispanics. Every time the teacher asked for answers about the material; only English-speaking children could respond and I was ashamed that I couldn't respond even if I wanted to respond. The Spanish-speaking kids didn't seem to mind that we were behind in school, except for me. When the teacher asked one of the sp...... in middle of paper......I was not able to teach them what I was learning. I only speak English at home now because it has become my parents' main language. If they had not learned English, they would not be able to do the jobs they have now because English is a common language used to interact and communicate with people from different countries. I learned a new language and didn't mind that American children started with an advanced education because of their parents and relatives. Just like Alexie, I learned to read by reading everything I saw and thanks to the help of my teacher. I shared what I learned with my parents so they could learn with me. It helped me when I could read English because the subject at school was easier. I couldn't have the education I have now because in the US we might be surrounded by different languages but English will always be the main language..
