Essay / The links between education and child labor - 1447
As Indian economist and Nobel laureate Sen Amartya pointed out: “…the freedom to go to school is diminished not only by the weakness of their school systems, but also by the fact that children (and their parents) have no choice” (Bark 33). This quote highlights how many children are affected by family situations that force them to work and cannot go to school. When the family suffers from poverty, children and their parents have no choice but to allow their children to work and contribute to the family's income. Child labor and education have a complex relationship, but education can help reduce the number of children working and lift many people out of poverty. Child labor is a problem that deserves a lot of attention, as many young children are forced to work. In Peru, the proportion of children who work is 16% between six and eleven years old (Salazar 157). Children in rural areas start working for their families at a very young age. It is estimated that more than three million rural children work in Peru (Hobbs 189). Many families in Peru experience hardship due to poverty. It is helpful for their children to be able to work and contribute their earnings to increase their family's income. In Lima, child labor represents about ten percent of poor families' income (Hobbs 189). In Peru, millions of children are employed in many different professions, but most of them are employed in the mining and agricultural industries. In Peru, 48% and 40%, rightly so, of children from poor rural families work in agriculture (Salazar 157). Peru is a major exporter of minerals and metals (copper) in the world and creates many jobs in the paper sector......ee Organizations working to reduce child labor: – A case study in the mining sector of Peru Industry."
