The color of money in The Great GatsbyA major aspect of The Great Gatsby was the effect that money has on each of the characters. Money influenced Daisy's love, Tom's life, Nick's desires, Jordan's standards, and money also influenced Gatsby to get back what he lost. The effect of money on Daisy is noticed from the start. She is married to a rich man whom she says she loves. The love for her husband is not the same love she had with other men. This love is mainly influenced by the amount of money he has. She has known true love, but not with her husband or a rich man. The story tells us of her love affair with a poor man when she was younger and living in Tennessee. Daisy came from a wealthy family, so she was expected to marry a rich man, whether she truly loved him or not. Not only did money influence who she cared about, but also how she looked at those who didn't. Money also influenced Daisy's husband, Tom. Tom has always been rich. He was born into wealth and raised there. Tom's money was considered old money which also indicated that he was influential. Tom looked at people who didn't have money like they were nobody. Tom had a mistress who had no money, but he never thought of marrying her because she was poor. Tom treats people the way he wants because he has money and they don't. Nick is a man who has a lot of money, but he struggles to live the life he is trying to succeed in. Nick thinks this money is the only thing in the world. He struggles to earn more to be able to live the life he wants. Nick visits his cousin Daisy in the hopes that her husband could somehow find her a well-paying job. The house Nick lives in also indicates how much money he has. The house is quite small, but it's in West Egg which is a neighborhood reserved for people with money. Nick was happy living in the West Egg, even though people who really have money would live in the East Egg..
