Essay / Analysis by Fellow Richard Rodriguez - 1075
It was almost like he was learning two languages at once. This made it a little more difficult for him and his parents to understand what the whole school/education system was. Rodriguez spent much of her time reading while Hoggart said, "reading is a woman's game." (PDF). By saying this, he is implying that men are more likely and more accustomed to doing activities outside, while women are expected to stay indoors and read. Rodriguez's parents did not understand this whole concept due to their lack of language. This changed Rodriguez's life in a very important and impactful way. Education helped Rodriguez in a strange way saying that "While, because of my schooling, I was culturally separated from my parents, my education had ultimately given me ways to speak and care. " (355). This means that he became estranged from his parents due to his involvement with his parents throughout the educational process. It took them a long time to be together, taught him different cultures, and led him to make decisions his parents didn't like.
