According to the Britannica Online Encyclopedia (nd), a coordination compound is any type of substance that has a chemical structure that contains a metal as the central atom and surrounding it are groups of non-metals which are called ligands linked by coordinated covalent bonds. This means that the bonding electrons are provided by the ligand, the central atom is a Lewis acid (electron acceptor) and the ligand is a Lewis base (electron donor). There are a large number of these compounds and have different uses in various fields. Some of these compounds are vitamin B12, hemoglobin, dyes and pigments as well as catalysts which are mainly used in the preparation of organic substances. Moeller et al (……) state that among the many uses of coordination compounds, these uses rely on the ability of each compound to selectively dissolve or bind metal ions or remove ions from solution.
