Essay / Elk Grove Police Department - 819
The Elk Grove Police Department is by far one of the most well organized administrations I have seen. With only 18 months to plan, organize and bring this new department into full operation, it took more than just individuals, it took leaders to make it happen. The challenges this department faced were honestly by far an easy task to overcome. Elk Grove city leaders ultimately realized that creating their police department was the best decision for the community. They must use their groupthink leadership styles to ensure the success of their police department. The first question was how a small group of individuals were going to create a police department from scratch. What types of services will they provide and how exactly will they accomplish these tasks? The various leadership challenges must have seemed insurmountable at times. The process was difficult, but with the right leaders, they overcame leadership problems that few could easily resolve. A good starting point was the history of Elk Grove, the size of the city and the type of environment and cultural issues the new leaders would face. with. Sacramento, along with other cities like Elk Grove, is surrounded by many different cultures and is one of the issues that needed to be addressed. What is the crime rate in the city, hot spots, gangs and are these issues being looked into? These are just some of the challenges that needed to be addressed and what about the other issues the city was currently facing. What exactly do city leaders expect from this newly created department? One of the things I found interesting was the specialization of specific tasks, it was by far the first thing to do. The division of ......middle of paper ......the in the department. Recent trends have led to an increase in tattoos among the younger generation and this has been adapted by society as acceptable. Additionally, as the Elk Grove Police Department grows, the need for additional police officers will also increase. The question is how will they retain their police officers if other organizations promise starting salaries or better retirement conditions. Finally, it is difficult to critically evaluate a system that appears to be working well. Leaders perform their jobs well and managers manage their subordinates well. When it comes to a critical assessment of this process and public safety, I think Elk Grove is above the norm. They created a system that works. They went out and answered what was needed, made a list and made it happen. As I mentioned earlier, only leaders can undertake such achievements..
